Beneficiaries must be willing to insure their animals for 1, 2 or 3 years as per choice, and animals procured under GPY and BEDS are required to be insured for 3 years. The subsidy benefit is restricted to a maximum of 5 animals per household.

What type of coverage is provided under the scheme?

The scheme provides insurance coverage against the death of milch cows and she-buffaloes due to disease, accidents, or natural calamities. The coverage period may be for 1 year, 2 years, or 3 years, depending on the option selected by the beneficiary. There is no waiting period, and insurance coverage becomes effective immediately upon receipt of the farmer’s share of the premium.

The farmer pays only 15% of the calculated premium amount based on the insured value of the animal.

How is the value of the animal determined for insurance?

For animals procured under GPY, BEDS, or MKUY, the maximum insured value for eligible milch cows and she-buffaloes is ₹90,000/-. For non-scheme animals, the value of crossbred cows is calculated at ₹6,500/- per litre of milk produced, and indigenous cows at ₹9,000/- per litre of milk produced, while buffalo valuation is assessed by the local AVAS/VAS/BVO based on body condition and milk yield.

In case the company fails to settle the claim within 15 days, it is liable to pay 12% compound interest per annum to the beneficiary. If the claim is rejected, the farmer must be informed through SMS along with the reason for rejection.

What happens in case of delayed intimation or natural calamity?

If there is a delayed intimation of death beyond the prescribed period, the insurer may settle the claim up to 75% of the sum insured at its discretion, and intimation beyond a fortnight may result in “No Claim.” In cases of natural calamity or missing carcass, the SRC report of the District Administration may be accepted as proof of death. Proper documentation and photographic evidence are mandatory for claim consideration.

What provisions exist for loss of policy document, sale of animal or missing ear tag?

If the policy document is lost, the Insurance Company will issue a duplicate copy upon request. In case of sale or transfer of the insured animal before policy expiry, insurance coverage shifts to the new owner upon completion of required formalities and updating details on Bharat Pashudhan Portal within 48 hours.
