Ten years after demonetisation, cash has doubled and ₹500 fakes are up 20%

The notes scrapped on November 8, 2016 were worth ₹15.42 lakh crore, and 99.3% came back. Currency in circulation has since risen from ₹17.77 lakh crore to ₹43.16 lakh crore, and RBI data show 2,29,746 counterfeit notes detected in 2025-26.
