A mother who never went to school took the state to the Supreme Court; ₹25 lakh and a CBI probe followed

Lehra Bai, 35, from Chhattisgarh, fought a case over the alleged custodial death of her husband, Shravan Suryavanshi Tamre, who was arrested in January 2024 on allegations of possessing mahua liquor and died days later. The Supreme Court criticised the conduct of officials, ordered ₹25 lakh interim compensation, a CBI investigation and criminal proceedings against officials found guilty.
