New Delhi: Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat on Thursday morning, a key stop on a three-day official visit aimed at advancing the India-Poland Strategic Partnership.

Tusk is in India from October 21 to October 23. At Raj Ghat he laid a wreath at the memorial to the Father of the Nation.

He was then scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House for bilateral talks expected to focus on deepening cooperation between the two countries.

Earlier on Thursday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called on the Polish prime minister and discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation across sectors. In a post on X, Jaishankar said, "Pleased to call on Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Poland. Appreciated his sharing thoughts on deepening India-Poland cooperation across a wide range of domains." He said he looked forward to Tusk's meeting with Modi to take the Strategic Partnership forward.

Tusk arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday at Modi's invitation. He is accompanied by Poland's Minister of Finance and Economy Andrzej Domanski and a business delegation.

Discussions are expected to cover trade, defence and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. India's role in a changing Europe and two-way investment are also likely to figure in the talks.

India-Poland ties have grown in recent years, with room for cooperation in defence manufacturing, energy, agri-processing and information technology. Members of the business delegation accompanying Tusk are expected to hold meetings with Indian industry. The war in Europe has reshaped food and energy supply chains, and India is seen as an important partner in that context. A few agreements are expected during the visit.

Trade round-table discussions are expected alongside ambassador-level meetings. Poland is an important European market with investment openings for Indian firms. The visit is being watched for what it could do for trade between Europe and Asia.
