The mood going in is set by last week. The Nifty closed Friday at 25,030.35, up 493.75 points or 2.01%, reclaiming the 25,000 mark for the first time in more than eight months. The Sensex ended at 81,028.02, up 1,718.01 points or 2.17%. Both indices have now risen for seven straight sessions.
Across the week, the Nifty gained 8.58%, its strongest weekly advance in nearly six years. The Sensex added close to 9%. The combined market value of BSE-listed companies climbed from about Rs 475.34 lakh crore to roughly Rs 503 lakh crore.
Foreign portfolio investors have turned buyers. They have put in about Rs 45,970 crore into Indian equities in November so far. On Friday they net bought Rs 13,749 crore while domestic institutions net sold Rs 5,968 crore.
Three things pulled the money back. Brent crude fell through the week, easing the import bill for a country that buys most of its oil. A selloff in US artificial intelligence and chip stocks after the midterm results made cheaper markets look attractive again. And the rupee firmed to close at 93.89 against the dollar.
Ponmudi R, chief executive of Enrich Money, said the index had decisively broken out of its consolidation range. He put immediate resistance at 25,150-25,200, then 25,500, with 25,800-26,000 possible above that. Support sits at 24,800-24,600, a band that has drawn buying all week.
Trades placed on Sunday settle on Monday, November 9. The exchanges are shut on Tuesday, November 10, for Diwali Balipratipada. Bank branches are closed on Sunday, though UPI, ATMs and digital channels are running as usual.
