Paris: With violent protests mounting in France, the Indian embassy issued an advisory for Indian nationals on Wednesday. It applies to those living in France and those planning to visit.
"In view of the recent developments and localised curfews imposed in France, please remain vigilant and exercise due caution. Please avoid large gatherings and crowded places where protests are taking place, and follow the instructions and advisories issued by the local French authorities," the embassy said.
It advised people to monitor local news, check official government updates and watch for disruptions to public transport. Emergency contact details for the Embassy of India in Paris and the Consulate General of India in Marseille were shared.
The unrest began in late September 2026 over poor school conditions and teacher shortages, then widened into nationwide anti-government demonstrations driven by rising living costs, high fuel prices, public-sector budget cuts and discontent with the government.
Riots on October 17 caused widespread damage and led to thousands of arrests. Fresh demonstrations have been called for October 24. French Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin said 174 of the 2,500 people detained had been jailed, and a further 917 prosecuted.
Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said a "massive" security operation would be carried out on Saturday. The embassy urged Indians to stay alert.
The embassy said Indians should check the French government's website and the Paris transport operator's site for updates. Travellers were asked to stay in touch with their airline or travel agency for schedule changes. Earlier, Indian embassies in Italy and Albania issued similar advisories. Paris police prohibited a protest planned for Thursday, citing public safety. Several European governments have also advised their citizens to be cautious.
