Christchurch: India chased down 226 with two balls to spare to beat New Zealand by four wickets in the first of their five-match T20I series, making a winning start.

At Hagley Oval, New Zealand batted first and posted 225 for 4. It was their highest T20I total against India at home. In reply, India reached 226 for 6 in the allotted 20 overs to win.

Opener Sanju Samson was named Player of the Match. He made 67 off just 33 balls. India's middle order also kept the run rate up when it mattered.

The match marked the return of Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The inclusion of some younger players in the side sparked discussion about the captain's selection calls.

For both teams, the series is a chance to test combinations ahead of future international competitions. The second match of the series will be played at the same Christchurch venue on October 24.

India's win was built on calm batting in the closing stages of the chase. New Zealand's bowlers could not put a leash on the Indian batters.

In the coming matches, both sides are expected to test the balance of their spin and pace attacks.

New Zealand, batting first, made 225 for 4, their highest T20I total against India at home. In reply, India's openers got off to a brisk start to ease the chase.
