Chandigarh: Haryana's MLAs will sit for a special session on November 26 to mark Constitution Day, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said on Tuesday, announcing the date after a cabinet meeting.

The House will take up different aspects of the Constitution, Saini told reporters at a press conference in Chandigarh. The decision comes out of a Constitution fortnight, the Samvidhan Pakhwada, that the state has been running.

On Monday, the assembly held a "Janpratinidhi Sammelan" under the fortnight, with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and a cluster of state leaders present. The session date followed a day later.

Saini did not spell out the length of the sitting, whether a resolution would be moved, or what business the House would clear. He said various aspects of the Constitution would be discussed.

The fortnight has moved the state's political conversation onto the Constitution itself, and the special session takes that from the assembly lawn into the chamber. For the ruling party, Birla's presence in Chandigarh on Monday gave it a platform in the capital days before MLAs meet.

The Opposition will have the floor too. The Constitution is a subject no party can walk away from, which makes a political edge to the debate likely. The assembly's business advisory committee now has to schedule the sitting.

Haryana's winter session is months away. November 26 gives the House a single day in between, with a subject that will be recorded in the proceedings.

The assembly has not said how long the sitting will run or at what hour it will begin, and no official notification or agenda for the session has been issued yet.
