New Delhi: Apple has capped iPhone purchases in India at two units per customer across all models on its online store, a limit that takes effect just ahead of the October 23 launch of the iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone.

The cap applies to the total number of iPhones in a single order, not to one model. A buyer can order two iPhone Duos, or one iPhone Duo and one iPhone 18 Pro, in the same bag. Add a third and checkout is blocked, with a message: "A maximum of 2 iPhones can be purchased per customer. Please adjust the total quantity of iPhones in your order before checking out."

The rule also covers the iPhone 18 Pro Max, the iPhone 17 and the iPhone Air. Apple has not explained the move. Such limits are usually meant to keep bulk buyers and resellers from cornering launch stock, so that individual buyers get a fair shot. Apple had done something similar with the original iPhone in 2007.

Demand for the iPhone Duo has been high. Pre-orders opened on October 16, and, according to reports, delivery estimates for some buyers slipped to January soon after. Reports also suggest that only a few thousand units of the foldable are available for India in the first week of sale.

Buyers trying to work around the cap can still place separate orders on different accounts, though Apple's retail policy in India says it sells to end users only and reserves the right to refuse or cancel orders it suspects are for resale.

The iPhone Duo is listed on Apple India's website from Rs 2,99,900. The two-unit limit is visible on the Apple Store Online and applies to business and personal buyers alike.
