Hazaribag: Kushagra Rudra put out a video, then went to court. On Thursday he surrendered before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Rajeev Tripathi, in Hazaribag. He is the husband of Anushka Chakraborty, an advocate of the Jharkhand High Court, who was found dead at an apartment in Gupta Complex in the town's Bengali Colony on October 22.

In the video, released before he surrendered, Rudra denied any role in her death and shifted the blame to his father-in-law, Hazaribag Sub-Divisional Police Officer Rupak Kumar Singh said. According to police, Rudra claimed his father-in-law wanted to become a director in his company and had repeatedly pressed Anushka over it. He also listed financial demands he said were made of him.

Those are his allegations. They have not been independently verified, and police have not confirmed them. Singh said the police have moved the court seeking Rudra's remand. "All the secrets and truths of this case are expected to come out only after interrogation in police custody," he said.

Hazaribag Superintendent of Police Aman Kumar had earlier constituted a Special Investigation Team headed by Amit Kumar Anand. Teams were sent to West Bengal, Bihar and several parts of Jharkhand to trace Rudra before he surrendered.

The next step is the remand hearing, where the court will decide whether the investigation gets the custody it is asking for. Until a court rules on the allegations, Rudra remains an accused, not a convicted person.

Anushka practised at the Jharkhand High Court. After her death, Hazaribag police opened the investigation and widened it as the family pressed for answers.
