New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday cancelled the bail of Mokama MLA Anant Singh in the Dularchand Yadav murder case and gave him until December 1 to surrender.

A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and Prasanna B Varale set aside the Patna High Court's bail order of March 19, holding that the High Court had erred by not weighing the gravity of the offence and Singh's criminal antecedents. The court also directed Bihar Police to complete the investigation within four months and posted the matter for hearing after that period.

The petition against his release was filed by Niraj Kumar, the grandson of the deceased. His counsel had earlier told the court that Singh had not fully disclosed his 67 criminal antecedents.

The case dates to October 30, 2025, when Dularchand Yadav, 75, was killed at Basawanchak village in Mokama Tal, within the Ghoswari police station area, during campaigning for the Bihar Assembly election. Yadav was a former RJD leader and was canvassing for Jan Suraaj candidate Piyush Priyadarshi.

According to the police investigation, an SUV ran over Yadav. His family has alleged that he was shot first and then run over. The postmortem report indicated death from cardiorespiratory failure caused by shock following injuries to the heart and lungs from a hard and blunt object.

Singh was arrested on November 1, 2025 and lodged in Patna's Beur Central Jail. He contested the Mokama seat on a JD(U) ticket from custody and won it, then walked out after the High Court granted bail in March on a bond of Rs 15,000.

His political ground has narrowed sharply in recent days. JD(U) expelled him and his wife Neelam Devi for six years over anti-party activities, after he backed a Jan Suraaj candidate in the Patna Graduates' constituency Legislative Council election against the party's nominee. The state government withdrew Neelam Devi's membership of the State-Level Programme Implementation Committee, her Minister of State rank and her government accommodation, and on October 26 the Building Construction Department asked her to vacate the bungalow at 1, Mall Road. JD(U) has also asked Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar to disqualify Singh under the anti-defection law.

Speaking to reporters after the order, Singh said the court was right, that he had faith in the judiciary and would surrender on December 1. He alleged that Niraj Kumar, not the government, had driven the case.
